As they pick their way through the ruins, Korbal stops here and there to allow Tolan to take notes. He stops to take some wooden trinkets from a small building before they venture on to their destination.
Soon, they are watching from behind some rubble as a beastmen enters the temple. Korbal motions for Tolan to follow and they head inside, Korbal’s undead beastman in tow. The stone temple is small, mostly intact. It houses a single large room with stone benches facing a raised altar near the back. Beastmen are eating by the altar. They have differing animal aspects, bear, lion, lizard even owl like aspects. They turn when the group enters the temple, howling and growling they charge with claws and clubs raised.
5 Beastmen 4, 1, 5, 3, 5 HP. Claws/Clubs d4 damage.
Korbal casts Clouds Descend to the Earth, a thick billowing sickly fog falls, centering around Korbal. All but, 2 of the beastmen fall, choking and tearing at their skin. Tolan turns to Korbal panicking, eyes wide and choking. Korbal winks and raises his spear as one of the beastman comes at him. It falls at Korbal’s feet succumbing to the corrupting poison. Korbal’s undead beastman falls as it is clubbed by another. Tolan falls lifeless to the ground, hand at his throat. Korbal, left with a minor wound is surrounded by corpses as the sickly mist fades away.
Clouds Descend to the Earth: (d6 damage to all except caster for d6 rounds) 2 damage for 4 rounds.
Korbal walks over to Tolan’s corpse, smiling as he crouches over him to cast Decay is the Way of All Things. Tolan stumbles to stand, staring at Korbal with blank eyes. Korbal in an amiable tone: “See, I knew we could become good friends. Ha Ha!” Korbal pats down Tolan. “Don’t mind me. Ah, thank you.”
2 more rations, 100 sp from Tolan
“Now, why don’t you show me where that treasure is?” Tolan walks over behind the altar and pulls out a great horned helm depicting the demon Malakai.
“Excellent. Now place it on the Altar. I have just the thing.”
Korbal throws the round ceramic vessel with the skull design at the helm. It shatters and sprays acid. The horned helm twists and deforms until it is virtually unrecognizable. Korbal leaves the smoking ruin on the altar. Turns to Tolan who looks back blankly, some drool hanging from his chin. “Come Tolan, I have a few hours use out of you yet!”
2XP Korbal reaches level 2 and gains 2 HP.
Notes:
This was a fun session to run. Tolan was a random NPC encounter and Korbal really took it to another place than I normally would. I am hoping Korbal survives long enough to try out some higher tier magic.
I left some travel days out of the write up that did not add to the main story. Korbal had more interactions with Tolan’s skull.
Gods he’s so nonchalant about necromancy, love it
Love it! Your drawing perfectly captures Tolan’s recruitment into the friends list of Korbal! I’m excited to see more of the magic system and Korbal’s growing army of temporary friends haha
